Dining etiquette stretches back centuries – the first descriptions of such traditions were documented by the Ancient Greeks. European dining manners, which weare more familiar with date back as far as 16th century. However, the questionis: Why should we stick to these outdated elitist ways of living?
Our performance is about inviting people to participate in our dinner as guests and together through the immersive experience we question and break these dining rules. Our target group was university students, since they would be the perfect ones to critique and reflect on such outdated social constructions.
The performance resembles a play; there is a storyline, which is divided in 3 parts – first, second and third course. There is also an individual scrip for everyone, which is given to them in the form of a menu. Throughout the courses the dining atmosphere transforms from being all white and in order to a colorful chaotic mess. We wrote the script so people could interact with each other – during the first stage with the script we are questioning the actions around the table, while with the second course we criticize the conversations that we have when we are around the table, the third stage is pure improvisation.
